Airline Credit Quality Makes Gradual Ascent; Low Cost Carriers Lead The Way

Global airlines belied their reputation for losing money and destroying shareholder value in 2016. Bond investors had reasons to feel upbeat as well – the sector enjoyed a modest but steady increase in overall credit quality. Credit Benchmark’s latest report, Global Airlines Sector: Credit Trends, shows that the average overall credit quality for the airline sector improved from b to b+ over the final six months of 2016, with European low cost carriers ranking better than their full-service peers in Europe, and among the best rated airlines globally.
